Can solid surface be bent without heating?
Let’s get straight to the point: YES, solid surface can be bent without heating, but this is done only in very specific cases. Let us explain.
At Indutec Solid, we work with Krion solid surface from the Porcelanosa Group. Thanks to its high flexural strength, cold bending is possible. Obviously, depending on the material thickness, we have different bending radii. For example, the standard sheet we work with at Indutec Solid is 3600 mm long with a thickness of 12 mm, which can reach a bending radius of 1800 mm—not bad at all. And if the sheet thickness is 6 mm with the same length, the bending radius could reach 900 mm, even better.
To use this cold bending technique, a skeleton, frame, wooden structure, or similar is needed to hold the material in shape. The solid surface is then glued with polyurethane sealant (for example, Butech’s P404) or mechanically fixed using the K-FIX or K-BOLT systems, both from Butech.
And to finish, here is an example of an installation done by Indutec Solid without heating the material. One of Porcelanosa Group’s early projects with solid surface was the work by architect Fran Silvestre at the recognizable Casa Balint in Bétera, Valencia. The entire facade is installed with cold-bent solid surface.
